This course develops learners’ competence in mathematical concepts and skills necessary for problem-solving in real-life situations. It builds on prior knowledge of numbers, operations, and measurement, while introducing higher-level concepts such as algebraic expressions, geometry, statistics, and probability. Learners are guided through structured activities to improve logical reasoning, accuracy, and application of mathematics in everyday contexts.
Learners are expected to:
Possess prior knowledge of basic arithmetic operations, fractions, and decimals from Grade 7.
Have access to learning materials such as:
Mathematics exercise books
Mathematical sets (compass, ruler, protractor, divider)
Graph books
Scientific calculator (where applicable)
Actively participate in class activities, group discussions, and problem-solving exercises.
Complete assignments, projects, and continuous assessments on time.
Demonstrate discipline, curiosity, and consistency in practice to master mathematical skills.
By the end of Grade 8 Mathematics, learners should be able to:
Numbers and Operations
Apply the four operations on integers, fractions, and decimals accurately.
Use the correct order of operations (BODMAS) in problem-solving.
Represent integers, fractions, and decimals on number lines and compare them logically.
Algebra
Form and simplify algebraic expressions.
Solve linear equations and inequalities.
Apply algebra in real-life word problems.
Geometry and Measurement
Construct and measure angles using appropriate mathematical instruments.
Apply properties of triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles in problem-solving.
Calculate areas, perimeters, volumes, and surface areas of plane and solid figures.
Statistics and Probability
Collect, organize, and represent data using bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs, and pictographs.
Interpret statistical data to make decisions.
Calculate probability of events using simple experiments.
Mathematical Reasoning and Application
Apply square roots, squares, and standard form in problem-solving.
Estimate, approximate, and round off numbers correctly.
Demonstrate logical reasoning and accuracy in solving real-life mathematical problems.
