To help you learn well and enjoy the Creative Activities learning area in Grade 3, the following are needed:
Materials such as plain paper, coloured pencils or crayons, scissors (safe for Grade 3), glue or paste, simple craft materials (e.g., small shapes, coloured paper, fabric scraps) so you can draw, cut, paste and make simple designs.
A classroom or learning space where you can move around, talk with classmates, show your ideas and share your designs.
Hands-on activities: you will draw shapes and patterns, cut and paste materials, use colours, make a design or model with teacher guidance and your own ideas.
Pair or group work: you may talk with a partner or a small group about a design idea – first think together, then each of you make your own version.
Use of everyday environment: look around in your classroom, home or outside for shapes, colours or patterns – then use some of those ideas in your design work.
Teacher guidance and support: your teacher will show simple examples, ask you questions like “What shape is this?” “What colours will look good together?” and help you plan your design.
Fun and interactive learning: you might have a small shape-hunt game, share your work with the class, explain what you made and why you chose those colours or shapes.
Safe use of tools: always follow your teacher’s instructions when using scissors, glue, craft materials so you are safe and your work looks good.
The Creative Activities learning area for Grade 3 is about helping you use your imagination, skills and materials to make simple creative work – drawing, designing, colouring, cutting, pasting – and then sharing and explaining what you have made. You will learn about shapes, colours, patterns, textures and how to arrange them to create something nice and meaningful. You will also learn to talk about your work: why you chose certain shapes or colours, what your design shows. Under the CBC system you are not just copying but creating, thinking and collaborating. This area helps you express your ideas, work with others, and enjoy making something by yourself or with friends.
By the end of Grade 3 in the Creative Activities learning area, you should be able to:
Recognise, name and use a variety of basic shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval) and colours in your creative work.
Safely use art & craft tools (colour pencils/crayons, scissors, glue/paste) with guidance from your teacher.
Create a simple design or craft: draw or construct a picture, model or collage using shapes, colours, patterns, and maybe texture or simple materials (paper, fabric scraps, ribbon) to show your idea.
Explain your design in your own words: say why you chose certain shapes, colours or materials, and what your design means or shows.
Work together with a friend or in a small group: discuss a design idea, share thoughts, then each make your own version of the design.
Look at your own work and that of others: give a simple positive comment or suggestion for improvement.
Observe design ideas in real life: notice shapes, colours and patterns around you (in class, home, nature) and use some of those ideas in your own design work.
