Learning Area Requirements

For Chemistry at Form 2 level under the 8-4-4 system, learners are required to:

  • Acquire basic knowledge of chemical concepts and phenomena as outlined in the syllabus.

  • Develop practical skills through laboratory work, safe handling of chemicals, and accurate observation and recording of results.

  • Develop scientific attitudes: curiosity, open-mindedness, critical thinking, and ethical conduct in experiments.

  • Apply chemical knowledge to solve everyday problems, make informed decisions about materials and the environment.

  • Communicate chemical ideas clearly, using appropriate chemical language, symbols, formulae and equations.

  • Prepare for subsequent higher levels of study by building foundational understanding.

Learning Area Description

Chemistry in Form 2 introduces learners to the structure and behavior of matter, chemical bonding, the periodic table, and the classification of substances including acids, bases and salts. Learners explore how substances combine and change, the formation of compounds (including salts), and the practical uses of such compounds in daily life. Through experiments and inquiry, learners build the skills of observation, measurement, recording and evaluation of chemical processes. This learning area lays the foundation for further study of physical and organic chemistry in higher forms.

Learning Area Outcomes

By the end of this unit/topic on salts, learners should be able to:

  1. Define what a salt is and identify examples of salts.

  2. Explain how salts are formed (e.g., by reaction of an acid with a base, metal, oxide or carbonate).

  3. Distinguish between different types of salts (e.g., normal salts, acid salts) and describe their properties.

  4. Describe methods for preparing salts in the laboratory and write simple chemical equations for their formation.

  5. State and explain at least two uses of salts in daily life, industry or agriculture.

  6. Demonstrate safe laboratory practice when handling salts and reagents.

  7. Apply knowledge of salts to solve simple everyday or real‐life problems (e.g., preservation, fertilisers, water treatment).
