Learning Area Description

This module, Foundations of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), is designed for Kenyan lower primary teachers (Grades 1–3). It introduces the key concepts, classroom practices, and instructional foundations needed to support early reading and numeracy development under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The module focuses on helping teachers understand how children learn to read and count, identify learning difficulties early, and apply practical teaching strategies in real classroom settings. It connects theory to everyday classroom experiences, especially in contexts with large class sizes, limited resources, and diverse learner needs.

Delivered through self-paced virtual learning, the module includes videos, reflections, discussions, classroom observations, and a final assessment. It emphasizes practical application, teacher reflection, and evidence-based instruction to improve learner outcomes in literacy and numeracy.

Learning Area Outcomes

By the end of the module, learners (teachers) should be able to:

  1. Explain the meaning and importance of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy within Kenya’s CBC.
  2. Describe how children learn to read, including key components such as phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  3. Describe how children develop early numeracy skills, including counting principles, number sense, subitising, and place value.
  4. Identify learners who are struggling in reading or numeracy and interpret classroom evidence to understand their needs.
  5. Reflect on how teacher beliefs, expectations, and classroom practices affect learner performance and confidence.
  6. Conduct simple classroom observations or mini-assessments and accurately record findings.
