Learning Area Description

This professional development module is designed to equip you with the specialized knowledge and instructional routines required to teach early literacy in Grades 1–3. Rather than relying on memorization or "guesswork," this module grounds your practice in the Science of Reading. You will explore the oral-to-print continuum, mastering how to transition learners from hearing spoken sounds (phonological awareness) to decoding written symbols (phonics). The module emphasizes practical classroom application, providing you with systematic routines for both English and Kiswahili instruction within the Kenyan curriculum context.

Learning Area Outcomes

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Analyze the Literacy Continuum
    • Distinguish between phonological awareness (oral skills) and phonics (written skills)
    • Ensure lessons target the correct developmental level
  • Implement Systematic Instruction
    • Apply a research-based scope and sequence
    • Progress from simple sound manipulation to complex blending and segmenting
  • Master Explicit Teaching Routines
    • Use the “I Do, We Do, You Do” (Gradual Release of Responsibility) model
    • Teach letter-sound correspondences with high learner engagement
  • Evaluate Instructional Texts
    • Select appropriate decodable books based on learners’ phonics knowledge
    • Avoid reliance on predictable or memorized texts
  • Bridge Multilingual Instruction
    • Teach reading effectively in both English and Kiswahili
    • Identify and use similarities and differences between the languages
  • Diagnose Reading Barriers
    • Use structured observation tools
    • Identify decoding gaps and plan targeted interventions
